Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Hon. Deodat Indar, recently met with the management teams of Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and Power Producers and Distributors Inc. (PPDI) following an increase in Guyana’s peak electricity demand to 241 megawatts (MW).
This represents an increase of approximately 20 MW compared with the peak demand of around 221 MW recorded during the corresponding period last year.
Generation Capacity and Critical Works Reviewed
During the meeting, discussions focused on available generation capacity, ongoing projects, substation upgrades, contractor-related matters and the scheduling of critical works needed to strengthen Guyana’s electricity system.
PPDI currently manages approximately 106 MW of generation capacity and continues to play an important role in supporting the country’s electricity supply.
Inspections Requested for GPL Substations
Minister Indar also called for comprehensive inspections of GPL’s 14 substations. He requested a detailed report outlining the condition of each facility, identifying areas requiring attention and recommending the upgrades necessary to improve reliability and performance.
These inspections will help to determine the condition of the substations and support the planning of essential maintenance and upgrade works.
Consumers Encouraged to Conserve Electricity
Energy conservation was another important area of discussion. With Guyana’s peak electricity demand currently elevated, consumers are encouraged to use electricity responsibly, particularly during peak periods.
Simple conservation measures include switching off lights, air-conditioning units, appliances and other electrical equipment when they are not in use.
GPL and PPDI will continue working closely with the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation to address immediate operational needs, advance critical upgrades and support a more reliable electricity supply for consumers across Guyana.
